Shots of That 100 Proof: Meek Mill – 4-4 Parts 1 & 2

Meek dropped a couple of EPs this month, the latest two days ago, both named 4-4. Apparently the name is a reference to when his Dreamchasers 4 mixtape will release, because apparently somebody is hotly anticipating that thing. Anyway, let’s get down to it.

Shot of That 100 Proof: Stalley – The Laughing Introvert;

For 2016, I’m going to try to get at least 2 posts a week, hopefully more. That means more Shots of That 100 Proof vs lengthier pieces. Which makes sense given that I have a hard time writing long pieces for music about which I have little to say. And that’s what is most often released. Hopefully that plan agrees with you. I’m not trying to simply get more “content” online, I want to say what I think about as many things as possible, and not every release deserves 1000+ words.

Stalley - The Laughing Introvert
Fuck y’all! Back to wheel-twerkin!

Stalley is best when talking about cars and/or drinking lean. This has been documented on Honest Cowboy. His ability to do other things was documented on his disappointing album, Ohio, where he ignored his slowed-down roots for the sake of blasé-ass hip-hop. Where I once thought that Ohio was a creative blunder, I not think that label expectations inspired that poor direction, because Stalley is right back to his old tricks on this likely expectation-less mixtape, The Laughing Introvert. Big K.R.I.T. – It’s Better This Way

After Cadillactica (sorry I never got around to reviewing that, but it’s mostly great), I’m settling into a groove with K.R.I.T. With each release, I enjoy the hell out of the songs about simple stuff like sex and cars, but I can’t be bothered with some of his more meaningful songs. Case in point, I’m really struggling with how to rate his latest mixtape, It’s Better This Way. It’s definitely not bad, but is it outstanding?

on the nose much?

D12 – The Devil’s Night Mixtape

Back in Eminem’s Marshal Mathers LP days, I was introduced to D12 on the song Under the Influence. Having already been decently familiar with famous Eminem but knowing nothing of his past, I was kind of amazed. It turned out that the transgressive White lyricist was backed by a crew of Black hardcore rappers, who shared some of his shock tendencies but were mostly just really solid emcees. So I was excited to hear more of the Dirty Dozen, but singles like Purple Pills and My Band annoyed me much too much to allow that to happen. Now, here I am, in 2015, finally listening to a full D12 project, The Devil’s Night Mixtape. And just like with Guilty Simpson, I’m kicking myself for waiting so long with another Detroit artist!

Hasty Generalization: Puff Daddy – MMM

Puff Daddy - MMM
Somewhere out there, one of you asked for new Puff Daddy music. This is your fault…

Once again, I’m playing something that I didn’t expect nor want. Why spend the time? Mainly, because I need the clicks! No Way Out was DOPE! So Puff Daddy  decided to drop this MMM (Money Makin’ Mitch) mixtape, and a forthcoming sequel to No Way Out, before turning his de facto retirement into an official retirement. Apparently, music has been holding him back from moving on to the next thing that God has destined for him. Coulda fooled me…
