Lil Wayne – Sorry for the Wait 2

Pretty obvious symbolism here

I doubt any hip-hop head isn’t aware of Lil Wayne’s dispute with Birdman and Cash Money RecordsSorry 4 the Wait 2 is his apology to fans for the delays of the release of his upcoming Carter V album, delays that apparently are totally due to Cash Money’s management not wanting to release the album as Wayne has prepared it. So instead we have this mixtape, free music to help us withstand the waiting.

Unfortunately, this is far from Wayne at his best. While 2014’s Believe Me single with Drake excited me for Carter V, the only song here that does the same is Used To, which also features Drake. Between the long, booming bass and Wayne and Drake’s stellar verses, it makes this tape worth the download if nothing else does.

Sorry 4 the Wait 2 needs that help because too much of it feels aimless: random lines put together into a long verse on a jacked popular beat. This style works best when these beats are already interesting, so songs like Selsun Blue, using Troy Ave’s All About the Money, and Wayne’s take on Dej Loaf’s Try Me are head and shoulders above snoozefests like his jacking of OG Maco’s You Guessed It, where the sparse beat does nothing to elevate the lazy writing and the song is made worse by occasional screaming just like OG Maco’s terrible original song. His best verses of this freeform style have been packed with interesting lines, but instead, most songs on this tape just have a few quoteable bars. As a result, he sounds rushed, or maybe distracted. Hopefully this legal drama gets worked out soon, with him getting his due money, so he can return his full attention to making the good music that mostly isn’t on this mixtape.

*Don’t get me started on the Drunk in Love struggle remake with Christina Milian. Everyone involved should be dummy smacked.

**I’m finding it really fun to note Wayne’s references to hilarious parts of the Friday movies. On Used To he says “I got mind control over Debo”, like Chris Tucker on Friday:

And on the remix to TI’s About the Money, he said “shoot him in the head, he said look at my roof!” a reference to Mike Epps in Next Friday

I appreciate anybody who recognizes the hilarity of these movies!

  1. Well I’m starting to think that maybe Birdman was right in shelving Tha Carter V if it contains more of what was on here. In a business sense it might have been better for Birdman to let Wayne flop. Do you think Cash Money can survive without the Young Money artists?

    1. Not at all. Who’s even important and signed to the label outside of the young money people? My money says that Carter 5 is experimental but decent, better than this, and this half-wack mixtape was just a last-minute effort
